SOPHIA VYZOVITI [UTH]

Univ. Prof. Dr. Sophia Vyzoviti [Faculty of Engineering, Department of Architecture, UTh, Volos]

Univ. Prof. Dr. Sophia Vyzoviti’ s research focuses on the transformations of urban habitat in the context of global migratory, fiscal, and environmental crises, investigating architecture as the integration of theory with practice through the lens of social equity and emancipatory design methodologies. In her professional and academic studio, she integrates experimental form-generation with participation, producing full-scale prototypes of temporary urban installations. She is tenured Professor at the Department of Architecture, School of Engineering, University of Thessaly. She holds a PhD in Design Knowledge Systems from Delft University of Technology and is alumna of the Berlage Institute and the School of Engineering of the Department of architecture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Dr. Vyzoviti has been contributing to architectural education, discourse and practice with innovative concepts, designs and applications, showcased in monographs, international conference proceedings, journals, collective volumes, and exhibition catalogues for the past two decades. Her first monograph “Folding Architecture: Spatial, Structural and Organizational Diagrams” investigated folding as generative process in architectural design, leading to new paradigms of folded plate and landform buildings. Following “Supersurfaces” and “Soft Shells: Porous and Deployable Architectural Screens” investigated the materiality of pliable surface prototypes in a wide range of scales from garments to the solar building facades. Her recent work focuses on the role of performative micro-structures in creative and green placemaking by producing cases of situated research in action. Her book on micro dwelling generative typologies in “Mikrokatoikia. Atlantas gia Arhitektones” has found applications in participatory place making workshops and generated a plethora of micro-structures. She has designed public buildings, urban spaces as well as produced medium sized renovation of private homes in Greece and in the Netherlands. She conducted situated research about Tiny-Houses and Micro-Apartments in the Chicago metropolitan area as Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the School of Architecture, University of Illinois at Chicago.

Univ. Prof. Dr. Sophia Vyzoviti is principal researcher of the Greek chapter of EDITUA.
