Prof. Piotr Skrzypczyński, PhD, DSc.

Prof. Piotr Skrzypczyński is a graduate of the Poznan University of Technology (1993). He obtained his doctoral and postdoctoral degrees in robotics from the same University in 1997 and 2007, respectively. He was awarded the title of Professor in 2020.

Since 1993, Piotr Skrzypczyński has been employed at Poznań University of Technology, where he currently holds the position of full professor. He is Head of the Robotics Division within the Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (IRIM). In the years 2023–2024, he served as Deputy Leader of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity at Poznań University of Technology. He is also a member of the Scientific Council of the University's Doctoral School. In 2017, he held a visiting professorship at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom.

He has served as an expert for the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR) in the development of the INFOSTRATEG programme and is currently Chair of the Steering Committee for this strategic initiative. He has reviewed proposals for the National Science Centre (NCN) and the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA), and has also evaluated projects under the Horizon 2020 framework.

He has acted as Principal Investigator or leading researcher in several projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the NCN, and the NCBR, as well as in Horizon 2020 and EU-funded cascade grants.

He is the author or co-author of over 200 publications in the fields of robotics and computer science, a programme committee member of multiple national and international conferences, and serves on the editorial boards of International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science (AMCS), Industrial Robot, and the Journal of Automation, Mobile Robotics and Intelligent Systems (JAMRIS).

He was a mentor in the NCN Polonez Bis project (2023–2024) and has supervised eight completed doctoral theses (with three more in progress), two of which received awards from the Polish Society for Artificial Intelligence (PSSI) for the best Polish PhD theses in the field of artificial intelligence.

Piotr Skrzypczyński’s current research focuses primarily on mobile robotics and machine perception. His work covers simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM), autonomous navigation of mobile robots, large-scale mapping, multisensory perception systems, perception-based motion planning, as well as machine learning in robotics and image processing. His scientific interests also extend to the foundations of artificial intelligence, particularly explainable machine learning and the reproducibility of research in AI.
