QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

PORTFOLIO

Requirements

Architecture (ENG)

  1. Architectural projects - plans, sections, site plan, details, brief description of technical solutions, visualizations, concept sketches, photos of the model - best 3 projects, 1 project on 1 board.
  2. Urban design - summary of the area of the site, plans, sections of the site, visualizations, details, brief description - best 3 projects, 1 project on 1 board.
  3. Graphic works - up to 8 works, including at least 3 works made in pencil on 50x70 format. The subject matter of the works should show the space drawn from nature or from imagination and take into account the principles of perspective, proper composition of the work, framing, chiaroscuro, etc., 1 project on 1 board.

Interior Design (BACHELOR)

  1. Projects related to interior design - plans, sections, details, a brief description of technical solutions, visualizations, concept sketches, photos of the mock-up - the best 3 projects, 1 project on 1 board.
  2. Graphic works - up to 8 works, including at least 3 works made in pencil on 50x70 format. The subject matter of the works should show the space drawn from nature or from imagination and take into account the principles of perspective, proper composition of the work, framing, chiaroscuro, etc., 1 project on 1 board.,

1 project on 1 board. The portfolio should be no larger than 20 MB.

The engineering thesis will be evaluated using the criteria that are included in the methodological guide on page 7 at: https://architektura.put.poznan.pl/sites/default/files/2024-03/PRZEWODNIK_IN%C5%BB_23-24_EN.pdf . The criteria outlined there apply to functional and formal aspects of the work, but also to structural, analytical and other aspects. Portfolios should therefore present skills in these areas, which in turn should make the selection easier for promoters. Therefore, the appropriate selection of representative parts of selected projects, its readability and aesthetics is such an important element of any portfolio. Architects should also be characterized by the ability to work creatively and imaginatively in solving the problems encountered. This is another aspect that may convince the promoter to choose you as his graduates.

What format should the urban and architectural design boards be presented in?

The guidelines for preparing a portfolio do not specify its specific format. Only a note about the maximum file size (20MB) was left. During the promoter's selection, the portfolio pages will be viewed primarily on computer screens so the preferred layout is horizontal, but if the student has mainly vertical boards he/she has the option to implement the portfolio in this layout as well.

Interior design projects should also be considered in the architecture portfolio?

You can add the interior design project if it does not exceed the total file size (20MB).

Does the format of each board have to be the same? For example, can there be a project vertically and another horizontally? The same question about the size of the boards, do they have to be the same every time, or can the resolutions vary?

The portfolio guidelines allow quite a lot of flexibility in their preparation. In theory, the format of the boards does not always have to be the same, but a uniform format for the entire portfolio makes it easier to view and ensures a consistent appearance. For the same reason, it is advisable to keep the resolution of all presented elements fairly uniform, although minor differences should not affect the view of the whole.

Should the portfolio be signed with the name on each page?

If it is clear from the first page(s) whose portfolio it is, there is no need to write the author's name on each page.

Should we sign group works, e.g. those from urban planning, with the names of the authors, or just that it is a group work, or not sign them at all?

It is in good taste to sign group projects with the names of all authors (in this case, including the author of the portfolio).

Should we add the subject supervisor, semester and subject in which the project was done in the project description?

Also, it is in good taste to name a project tutor who formally remains a co-author of the semester project. In my experience, indicating specific tutors can be very welcome, for example, during a job interview and provide additional confirmation of your skills.

It is advisable to write the name of the subject in which the project was done, but this is not mandatory. The same applies to the semester of study, which can indicate some development of design skills during your studies.

Does the portfolio necessarily have to be provided as a pdf file, or can it be as a website? Some students have previously created their portfolios this way. On such a website, you can also attach the original board from the class as a pdf and this solves the problem of being limited to 20 MB, since the portfolio is online.

The portfolio will be uploaded to the ekursy system when selecting a promoter. It must also be uploaded to the system during recruitment for the second cycle of studies. We plan for the portfolio during recruitment to have the same requirements as during promoter selection. Currently, there is no possibility of uploading a website or even a link to it as a substitute, but we will consider this possibility in the future.

Can urban planning projects also include projects such as those from Landscape Architecture or Greenery Design, since it was more of a field design and not a design of a specific building?

The portfolio is all about presenting your skills in the best possible way. However, please keep in mind that you are preparing it for a specific purpose - the selection of a promoter, recruitment for a second degree program, or even later a job interview. Its preparation is also a certain test of your ability to select and present such projects or parts of them that, in your opinion, will best achieve this goal. The selection of projects for the portfolio is the author’s responsibility, as is the interpretation of the guidelines.

If only draft models were made for some projects, are such enough?

An important role of the portfolio is to confirm the student's ability to make models, which, after all, will be one of the components of the thesis. Models should be shown in the portfolio, but please choose only the best ones. If they are only draft models, but have been done in an aesthetically pleasing manner, I would not hesitate to include them in the portfolio either. Photos of draft models are often included in the written part of the thesis to illustrate a certain stage in the development of the project.

Should graphic works be only drawings or, for example, can there be some visualizations or computer graphics (apart from these 3 works, which are written to be in pencil), or can sculpture be included in this category?

Apart from the 3 works in pencil, the choice of other graphic works (including sculptures) is up to the author. However, visualizations of buildings should be included in the portfolio, as a complement to the individual architectural or urban planning projects.

Is it actually true that one project must be on one board? The question is in relation to the fact that you have to present one project on one board. Should we assemble the portfolio from ready-made boards (one project on one page) or can one project be presented with panache on several pages, e.g. 2?

The project actually should be placed on one board. The portfolio can be assembled from ready-made boards, but then please keep in mind its maximum size (20 MB) and readability. Usually, portfolio pages are rearranged from selected elements of a particular project. If a student decides to include a large project on two boards, such a portfolio should not be automatically rejected for this reason. However, if possible, please include representative elements of a given project on one board. The promoter will see the student's design skills if, for example, in the case of a large project, he places only one floor and a beautiful visualization of one building on one page, a perfected cross-section and draft model on another page, and details and a site plan on yet another. However, it is the responsibility of the portfolio author to select these elements and their number, as well as how they are arranged on each page.

Is it supposed to be 1 pdf file or can there be also loose jpg or png? And if it is to be 1 pdf is it possible to increase the upload capacity?

No, please prepare 1 pdf file with a capacity not exceeding 20 MB. Please keep in mind that the way the portfolio is prepared within the set limits is for some promoters also a test of the student's skills, with which some authors perform better and others worse.

Can the building adaptation project also be included in the portfolio?

If you think that the building adaptation project shows some other skills that will be useful during the diploma, which you have not been able to present in other projects, please include this project in the portfolio as well.
