Dr. Siim Tuksam [Faculty of Architecture, EKA, Tallinn]
Dr Siim Tuksam is an accomplished architect, academic, and researcher based in Tallinn, Estonia. He serves as an Associate Professor, Head of Research and Head of the PhD curriculum in the Faculty of Architecture at the Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA). He is a co-founder of the algorithmic architecture research group and the wooden architecture competence center PAKK as well as a practicing architect and co-founder of PART – Practice for Architecture, Research and Theory.
He earned his Master's in Architecture (with distinction) from the University of Applied Arts Vienna (Angewandte) through the studio of Greg Lynn in 2013. In December 2020, he completed and defended his PhD thesis at EKA titled "Modulated Modularity – from mass customisation to custom mass production", which explores the intersection of digital architecture, modular design, and emerging fabrication techniques.
His research contributions include work on prefabricated timber structures and the development of algorithmic tools to streamline architectural design and production. Siim has co-authored notable research such as:
"Algorithmic Craftsmanship for Bespoke Timber Architecture" (2019), which examines bridging digital design and fabrication in timber industry contexts.
"ELEMENTerial – Construction System Study for CLT Offcuts" (2024), addressing waste-conscious design using cross-laminated timber (CLT) offcuts and promoting sustainable material reuse via algorithmic strategies.
At PART, Siim applies his academic insights in real-world projects, particularly focusing on algorithmic and timber-based architectural systems. He has spearheaded award-winning projects, including Estonia’s first high-voltage line design pylon, Bog Fox, and the pedestrian and cyclist traffic junction, Sindlinahk.
Beyond research, Siim actively contributes to architectural discourse and education. He co-curated exhibitions like "Body Building" for the Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2015 (TAB2015) and helped organize the EKA Open Lecture Series, curating international architectural dialogues. In 2017 he was awarded the Estonian Young Architect Award.
